ABSTRACT

The classical approach to the geotechnical structure design based on calculation model was to apply a total factor of safety, denoted most often as F or FoS. The design with the help of geotechnical structure behaviour modelling is typical for new types of structures, for new geotechnologies, with little practical implementation experience. The fundamental question was to design the slopes of excavation in such a way that they should be stable over a period of about one year. Basic regulations and recommendations about ground investigation, particularly in Europe, are parts of EC 7 Geotechnical Design, specifically EC 7–2 Geotechnical/Ground investigation. The results of a confirmatory Ground investigations (GI) serve as important chance to define the difference between the results of this last stage of GI with t results stated in the Ground investigation report, which were known during the design phase.
