ABSTRACT
Designing a mechanical artefact is a complex process and will require a significant financial and resource commitment to achieve a successful marketable product. On receipt of the marketing report requesting a design study, the project engineer will raise a product design specification (PDS) in which every part of the proposed design will be carefully reviewed. The design engineer allocated to the project will prepare sketches of the concepts that will fulfil the design requirements. The sales department will have sight of the completed design to allow them to begin their development of the marketing strategy and sales literature. Systems design is the process of defining the architecture, modules, interfaces and data for a system to satisfy a specific requirement. Prior to the initial design review, the design office will have prepared a number of potential design solutions based upon the initial specification generated by the marketing department. The PDS is the most singularly important document in the engineering design documentation.
