ABSTRACT

The purpose of Design for Manufacture is to ensure that the most economical practice has been applied to the design of the part. Engineering designers are more responsible for specifying the level of quality of a product more than anyone else within the manufacturing organisation. Design review is an important feature in ensuring that the quality in the design process is maintained. The design review provides a forum where all stakeholders can come together and discuss aspects of the design that will have an impact on their respective activity. A design review is a means of controlling the quality of the design and ensuring that all aspects of the design process fully meet the design requirements. Selecting materials is a fundamental part of design in the component meeting its design specification. In the ‘variety reduction exercise’ mentioned earlier, it was surprising to find the wide variation of parts that benefited from being designed with the intention of being made interchangeable.
