ABSTRACT

The platformer genre’s popularity continued into the 2000s, but things began to slow down. The only AAA studios putting out pure platformers was Nintendo, and the 3D Mario titles continued to be some of the best 3D platforming around. Platforming soon became a part of other designs, such as in the Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed series. This is different from the era of adventure-based platforming where the platformer system was the core gameplay loop. It was a lot harder to create unique obstacles and platforming sections in 3D compared to 2D. Platforming franchises like Ratchet and Clank and Jak would eventually downplay their platforming in favor of combat and exploration. A platformer is built purely on level design meant to be played solo.
