ABSTRACT

Setting aside any kind of argument regarding which life is more important, research that involves animal research subjects also requires a great deal of oversight. Animal testing is at least as regulated as human testing, particularly in the US Notably, invertebrate animals are not covered by the current regulations. Serious efforts and calls have been made to end animal testing. Methods are being developed that purport to make animal testing unnecessary. A research institution is running at its maximum allowed capacity regarding the number of animals in the aging facility. A research team is attempting to investigate how an animal adapts to changes in its body. Their purpose is to investigate whether animal body parts could be transplanted similar to the way organs are done. The goals of identifying potential dangers to humans is enough to justify the risk to animals and is likely why an Institutional Review Board would confer approval for such a study.
