ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two common types of masonry: concrete masonry and clay bricks (including mortar, grout, and plaster). It presents their properties, production methods, laboratory testing, etc. with numerical, worked-out examples. Considering the primary civil engineering materials, masonry is the oldest one but is still in use with full swing. Concrete masonry units have different names, such as cinderblocks, hollow blocks, or concrete blocks. Depending on the usages of units, they can be of two types: load-bearing concrete masonry units and concrete building units. Load-bearing concrete masonry units are produced in two ways: moisture-controlled units and non-moisture-controlled units. The Masonry Society (TMS) is an international gathering of people interested in the art and science of masonry with advancing the knowledge of masonry. TMS is an educational, scientific, and technical society dedicated to the advancement of scientific, engineering, architectural, and construction knowledge of masonry.
