ABSTRACT
Fiber optic technology can provide significant benefits to the military, especially in the fields of communications and sensing. The characteristics enjoyed by fiber optics make it an important option for military communications. Much research has been done on the possibility of using fiber optics to improve many military operations. Many of these studies examine how optical fibers are used in weapons systems, observation, optical computing, onboard vehicles, the transmission of information, and in various sensor techniques. The use of optical fibers in military fields is equivalent to their use in commercial applications. Fiber optic networks have other systems in place to install their units as required by circumstances, so these units in the field can simply "connect" to the network to establish a secure communication link. Fiber optic sensors have a large and very diverse range of sensing applications because of their extremely unique properties and their high ability to observe a wide range of physical parameters.
