ABSTRACT
What does it mean to be clever enough? My father was a policeman and my mother a midwife. They had not been to university but clearly were intelligent people and my mother in particular was well-read. I had one cousin who had studied at Glasgow University (English) but who now lived in Italy, as his wife was Italian.
