ABSTRACT

A number of specialized integrated online library systems have been developed to perform special tasks not routinely associated with medical library functions. Such systems include those developed by the US National Library of Medicine and the Swedish Planning and Rationalization Institute for the Health and Social Services. The US National Library of Medicine (NLM) has acquired biomedical literature for over 150 years and has provided information services throughout the world. Searching of commercially-available NLM online files is through the Elhill software. NLM also plans to experiment with the use of scanned images of selected journal titles as a means of filling certain requests for items from NLM’s collections more rapidly and with less wear and tear on the volumes in the NLM collection.
