ABSTRACT

Scrap, waste, and refuse lying around a work area constitutes superfluous and unwanted material. Bins and containers should be provided at strategically located positions so that scrap, waste, and refuse can be placed in them. The accumulation of waste and scrap takes up valuable workspace and also constitutes trip hazards and obstacles to the employees working in that area. There are a number of different types of receptacles for recyclable material, scrap, waste, or refuse. Depending on the application and the particular work environment, trash cans, rubbish bins, scrap drums, dumpsters, and other receptacles may be used. Scrap, waste, and refuse bins should be color coded in the same color for easy and speedy recognition. Color coding of scrap bins would form part of the organization’s color coding program. In most instances, bins that contain flammable material, or material that is likely to ignite spontaneously, are color coded red to denote a fire hazard.
