ABSTRACT

An understanding of the theory of Transactional Analysis (TA) can help us to understand relationship dynamics, especially if there seem to be difficulties. Striving to choose responses that keep us in the Adult ego state will encourage others to respond in a similar way and generally creates more effective relationship dynamics. Assertiveness is ability to express their thoughts and needs confidently and when they feel it is important to do so. Building on the TA theory described here, this generally requires us to be our Adult ego state. Leading others requires us to recognise the importance of assertiveness skills in the people we lead so they can safely share their thoughts and feelings, especially when things may not be going well for them. Assertiveness skills are particularly needed when having difficult conversations, or conversations with individuals who do not have well-developed listening skills.
