ABSTRACT

To encourage people to open up, we create a safe environment where ideas are welcomed. Conformity and groupthink have their origin in a number of places, which include: Peer pressure to conform to what the group is thinking, for example, ‘If you feel like we are going in the wrong direction, they can always work on something else or join a different team’ and stereotyping: ‘well, the receptionists are bound to disagree because they’re always saying they can’t take any more on’. Groupthink is less likely to happen if they watch out for these behaviours and positively encourage people to open up. In addition, they can make sure as leaders that they encourage opposing views, encourage people to explore alternatives and get them to comment on the risks of any course of action and how much they think these risks matter.
