ABSTRACT

We will not discuss formal meeting rules here, which might include checking previous minutes for accuracy and following up on action points, but instead will focus on the chair's role and skills in facilitating the discussion. Therefore, even though we may be a leader in the group, it doesn't necessarily mean that we will be the best person to chair the meeting. Here is a brief overview of what the chair needs to do in the meeting: The attitudes and skills involved are very similar to those of leadership itself, because these meetings are a microcosm of the process of change, condensed to a small space and a short period in time. Preparation is clearly important, and this is followed by the meeting itself in which we become aware of four strands of behaviour, which we seek to bring together in some form of consensus.
