ABSTRACT

In the real world of implementing quality improvement (QI), the authors constantly uncover things they hadn’t expected on the journey. They explore them in an attempt to dispel some of the myths around measuring for improvement. QI data should be different it needs to be simple to measure and easy to interpret. In summary, data to measure improvement needs to be 'just enough' to tell us if they are improving and frequent enough to tell us if our interventions are having an impact. This chapter explores 'measurement for improvement'. It not attempts to be a comprehensive guide to measuring quality improvement in healthcare. A Statistical Process Control (SPC) chart is a method for displaying performance data to check if the performance is continuing to be as expected. Quality improvement is likely to play a significant part in leadership hike.
