ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors suggest that people broadly base their trust and confidence on someone's integrity and ability; good leaders need to have both. They look first at integrity and ability, and later move on to consider why connection is important and how they can nurture people's willingness to collaborate with us. As leaders, if they can be seen to be open-minded enough to learn, others can maintain their confidence in us because however worrying the situation and at times our behaviour, they can see they have the ability to learn and improve. They said earlier that trust and confidence are not only based on our integrity but also on our ability, which for us means the ability to lead successfully through having the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours. Through attending to our deeper features of integrity and ability, other people come to develop trust and confidence in us.
