ABSTRACT

This unusual way of thinking about our behaviour and abilities brings together some thoughts about limits and limitations including what the leaders are capable of, how they under- and overplay ourselves and how their presence not only influences but also inadvertently limits others. In everyday jobs they are used to the idea that they have limits, thank goodness, because it means they don't have to do it all. Their limits can of course show where they need to expand boundaries by clarifying areas in which they need to grow. Limits are also opportunities because they show us where they need to work around our deficiencies by bringing in people who are strong where we are not. They can also see that it is nonsensical to ask which is the more valuable member of the team. Sometimes, unconsciously, well-intentioned behaviour or personality will have limits of usefulness and can cast a shadow that prevents others from giving the best of themselves.
