ABSTRACT

The transmission of synthetic sapphire is >50% over the spectral range 0.2–6 μm. Because of the optical transmission in the wide spectral range, synthetic sapphire is used for UV, VIS, and NIR optics. The temperature coefficients for the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices nO and nE of synthetic sapphire at 589.3 nm have been measured to be 13.6 × 10−6/K and 14.7 × 10−6/K, respectively. The birefringence (nE − nO ) of synthetic sapphire has been measured by Jeppesen. The temperature coefficient of the birefringence at 590.0 nm has been measured by Jeppesen to be 1.1 × 10−6/K.
