ABSTRACT

The Scientific Committee on Cosmetology (SCC) is consulted by the Commission regarding any scientific or technical problem arising in the field of cosmetic products, particularly those involving the safety of substances used in the preparation of cosmetic products and the composition and conditions of use of such products. In order to include a cosmetic ingredient in one of the Annexes to Directive 76/768/European Economic Community, European Association of Cosmetic Industries presents to the Commission a body of toxicological information obtained from studies developed on the cosmetic ingredient at issue. Such information relates to potential biological hazards of a cosmetic ingredient and to its safety evaluation based on a series of toxicological studies. The safety evaluation of cosmetic ingredients presently applied by the SCC consists of the analysis of all studies available concerning the toxicological potential of the chemical sub-stances under consideration. The SCC has estimated that consumer exposure to several types of cosmetic products of various uses.
