ABSTRACT
Intellectually, it was a seductive possibility leading to considerable self-experimentation, fraught with hazards associated with its misuse by those seeking to exploit the drug. Research, the major contribution in practically every advance that has been made in the understanding and treatment of drug addiction, may prove to be the most important factor in the resolution of the disorder. Any attempt to assess the future of the serious medical and social problem of addiction in the modem industrial and administratively oriented society must consider the use of a highly controversial experimental treatment form as a major factor in routing narcotic addiction.
