ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some topics of importance for oil industry and how modular approach has improved oil well performance. Modular approach has also streamlined offshore oil well construction and thereby reduced its cost and construction time. The hybrid approach results in “adaptable modularity,” which is the use of adapters to fit off-the-shelf pieces together with existing equipment. Modular approach implies prefabricating equipment and systems into modules off-site in a controlled manufacturing facility. The ability to bring together automation and modular systems has made it possible to economically tap into even small land-based oil deposits to major offshore oil fields. Modularization has become particularly prominent in the offshore oil and gas industry because the offshore facility development cycle is longer, riskier, and more expensive. The modular setup therefore makes it possible for suppliers to easily adapt their facilities and equipment in line with the needs of their customers.
