ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Bayesian Network (BN) for oil and separator. Oil and gas production separator receives the reservoir fluid from the oil well and separates it into oil, gas and water. Oil and gas separators are usually designed for a lower pressure than that of the shut off pressure of the well due to economic reasons, and sufficient layers of protection are provided for the vessel to mitigate the risk of an overpressure. The main causes for loss of containment (LOC) from a typical oil and gas separator are due to overpressure and leakage of flammable gas or liquid. Ignition of the same can result in serious fire accidents. Fire near the separator due to any extraneous causes could weaken the mechanical integrity of the vessel and in LOC. BN can be applied to analyze independent protection layers and Safety Instrumented Function for oil and gas separators.
