ABSTRACT

Polymer matrix composites are used in different sectors, such as aerospace, automobile, locomotive, and marine industries. The interface strength between the matrix and fiber is very critical in hydrothermal environments. Nanofillers are added to the polymer matrix to enhance the interface strength, as well as the strength of the bulk composites. The composites are degraded in water and hydrothermal environments. However, the degradation of the polymer matrix composites needs to be understood in order to design different composites for industrial applications. Hence, this chapter focuses on different diffusion mechanisms and water absorption behaviors through various models. Furthermore, the effect of temperature on the diffusion behavior of polymer matrix composites is discussed.
