ABSTRACT

The engineering community contributes directly to many of the sustainable development goals, including clean water and sanitation; affordable and clean energy; industry, innovation, and infrastructure; sustainable cities and communities; responsible consumption and production; and climate action. To innovate for sustainability, a shift must be achieved in the way engineers design and implement projects. Every engineering project contributes to or detracts from sustainability and engineers have to take responsibility. The best opportunities to deliver more sustainable engineering projects come by asking radical questions right at the start of each stage. Engineers should understand their important potential role in the sustainable development of communities and recognize the impacts of an engineering project on communities, global, or local, and consider the views of the community. The engineer’s role is to facilitate the emergence of change and act proactively to enable it by first trying out new solutions and then embedding these in standard practice.
