ABSTRACT
Using an expanded design space for visualizing with text enables extensions to many common visualization techniques. Additionally, many of these techniques are relevant to natural language processing and text analysis. Experimental and expert feedback is collected into checklists for making effective use of text, including language, legibility, use of alphanumeric codes, use of text formats, handling long labels, challenges with text layout, typeface choices, and interactions.
