ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the conventional design of core and shell type for single- and three-phase transformers. In single-phase core type transformer, the core is made up of the magnetic core and built with laminations to form a rectangular frame and the windings are arranged concentrically with each other around the legs or limbs. The low voltage windings are wound near the core and high voltage windings are wound over low voltage winding away from the core in order to reduce the number of insulating materials required. The cross-sectional area of the central limb is twice that of each side limbs. For shell type transformer, the cross-section may be rectangular. When rectangular cores are used the coils are also rectangular in shape. The chapter provides all the calculations that are needed to design a transformer. It also gives a design using MATLAB program.
