ABSTRACT

Free of the need to survive entry into an atmosphere, the design of the lunar module was dictated by expediency and the specific purposes of landing and providing a habitat on the Moon. The resulting design is certainly not aesthetically pleasing; many people feel it is ugly. The commander and the lunar module pilot were both provided with a pistol-grip attitude controller for the right hand and a thrust control for the left. Mounted between these controllers on the LMP side was the Data Entry and Display Assembly (DEDA), used for configuring the abort computer. Grumman initially installed them in the lunar module, assuming that the astronauts would wish to use them, but NASA had them removed. The astronauts demanded their return and they were re-installed. Then a NASA administrator asked why there was a development hold up on the LM and was told that there were problems such as the constant to-ing and fro-ing with the eight-balls.
