ABSTRACT

Network reliability represents a probability that a network node or network element can be functioned satisfactorily for a given time interval under particular operations. The networks are particularly susceptible to security compromise since these are designed to provide many user access points for the connection of remote networks. The transmission media connecting the various elements and networks are twisted-pair wires, coaxial cables, optical fibers, leased phone lines, microwave or satellite links. Considering the volume of the information in the network, other untrusty party intercepts the information transmitted in the network. Due to the tremendous increase in network users and services, the demand of increased accessibility of optical networks having communications through these networks requires eligible security. An optical network is faced with a variety of attacks such as jamming, physical infrastructure attacks, eavesdropping and interception. There is a unique challenge for achieving security in optical domain just like a conventional electronic security.
