ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces two parts. The first part is the analyses of hydraulic erosion of the landward-side slope of levees. The erosion data of three strengthening systems measured during full-scale flume test are introduced and their erosion characteristics and resistance are analyzed. The second part is the conceptual model of the erosion of levees. Based on the data of full-scale flume tests and erosion function apparatus (EFA) tests, a conceptual model for the overtopping erosion on the landward-side slope of levees and the process of levee failure are provided to describe the reason for the differences between the existing research on the erosion and failure of levees. The chapter explains failure modes and testing methods of HPTRM. It analyzes the hydraulic erosion of roller-compacted concrete during combined wave and surge overtopping based on the changes in the erosion area and erosion depth.
