ABSTRACT
Boundaries are formed when a flowing fluid encounters an obstacle in its path. In Chapter 8 we learned how to characterize an MHD boundary when the flow speed is subsonic. This discussion will now be extended to flows that are supersonic. It is well known that in this case, shock waves form. Shock waves are consequences of compressibility effects that become important when the flow speed approaches the speed of sound.
