ABSTRACT
The preceding chapter considered elementary cases of electromagnetic fields in the absence of any charged particles. However, it is known that the vast regions of space are populated by tenuous but significant amounts of charged particles. For example, close to a planet, there are ionospheric particles. Beyond the ionosphere, there are trapped particles of the Van Allen radiation belts, and the magnetosphere is enveloped in the expanding solar wind.
