ABSTRACT
The guiding center theory (first-order orbit theory) of single particles that we developed in the preceding chapter helps us understand how particles move around in complex electromagnetic fields. While this theory has given us important insights, it is not adequate when a system contains many particles. The single-particle picture must be augmented with a theory that can provide information on the dynamics of a group of particles.
