ABSTRACT

11.01 A country's transportation infrastructure network consists of all the transport-related civil works within that country. It includes airfields, railroad facilities, ports and harbours, and all roads, tracks, trails and paths. The transportation infrastructure being considered in this handbook is chiefly concerned with that portion which services low volumes of motorized, animaltractive and human-tractive forms of transport. However, the planning and expansion of this network must be carried out with proper regard to the other highway, air, rail and sea components that make up the overall transportation system. The priorities and procedures for carrying out such general transport sector planning and intermodal coordination are not included in this book as they are adequately dealt with in numerous other sources [4, 5].
