ABSTRACT

14.01 Appropriate technology selection is a critical step in the evaluation of rural access infrastructure (RAI) construction projects. Appropriate technology is defined as one that is both efficient and least costly [16]. Construction technology covers a spectrum of construction methods using various mixes of labour, animals, and equipment, with equipment-based construction being considered as high technology. The characterization of a construction methods as labour-based does not mean that equipment can not be used. Nor does equipment-based construction preclude using labour. The terms used simply identify the principal source of motive power used. The appropriate mix of labourers, animals and machines can be determined by the technical nature of the project, available resources, prevailing factor prices, and the socioeconomic environment in which the project is executed [16].
