ABSTRACT

5.01 Present transport aid technology has been developed within the context of assisting the rural population in their daily tasks. As a single sub-component in a development project, transport aids cannot be evaluated in isolation, but must interact with other possible transport sub-components to maximize the potential use of resource investments as described in Chapter 3. Transport aids include equipment to assist in human porterage activities such as shoulder or pickul bars; wheeled transport aids propelled by humans, such as wheel barrows and bicycles; animal transport aids such as pack animals, and animal-powered aids including sledges and carts; and motorized transport aids such as motorcycles and tractors and their associated aids like trailers.
