ABSTRACT

6.01 Rural access infrastructure (RAI) consists of paths, trails, tracks and feeder roads. This infrastructure carries an assortment of different transport aids as described in Technical Note 2.1, Annexe 2. Each aid has its own infrastructure requirements, as indicated in Technical Note 2.3. The evaluation of different links in the infrastructure network requires a degree of investigation which depends on:

the types of transport aids anticipated on that link, such as headbaskets, pack animals, and/or tractors with trailers;

the level of accessibility required as described in Chapter 3; and

the amount of resource investment anticipated for that link, varying from trails and paths requiring little improvement to feeder roads that may be substantially upgraded at some time during the project.
