ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, the torque equation for rotating machines is obtained in terms of self- and mutual inductances. This is the main equation of how torque is developed in all rotating machines. Then, the reluctance motor which makes use of the reluctance torque due to sinusoidal change in self-inductance of the motor is explained. An extensive coverage of the derivation of the mean torque equation in reluctance motors is given in the following sections of this chapter. This chapter discusses three types of step motors: the permanent magnet step motor, variable reluctance step motor, and the hybrid step motor. The chapter ends with the derivation of the mean torque equations of cylindrical machines in general. A derivation of the mean torque equations in synchronous motors and induction motors follows in the remaining last pages of the chapter.
