ABSTRACT

Diagnostics or faultfinding is a fundamental part of an automotive technician's work. The subject of diagnostics does not relate to individual areas of the vehicle. The knowledge needed for accurate diagnostics is in two parts: understanding of the system in which the problem exists; and having the ability to apply a logical diagnostic routine. This chapter explains diagnostics steps in relation to a more realistic automotive workshop situation. It uses a vehicle cooling system fault as an example. The chapter includes a section on root cause analysis to reinforce the importance of keeping an open mind when diagnosing faults and to stress the need to work in a logical and structured way. It provides a discussion on mechanical and electrical diagnostic techniques. The chapter also describes the closed loop vehicle systems and open loop vehicle systems.
