ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the engine operation, cylinder layouts, camshaft drives, and valve mechanisms of an engine system. It presents a table of engine fault diagnosis, including symptoms, possible causes, and suggested action. ‘Engine management’ is a general term that describes the control of engine operation. The fundamental tasks of an engine management system are to manage the ignition and fuelling, as well as other aspects. Programmed ignition is the term used by some manufacturers; others call it electronic spark advance. Constant-energy electronic ignition was a major step forwards and is still used on countless applications. Petrol/gasoline fuel injection systems can be classified into two main categories: single point and multipoint injection. The multipoint systems (used by almost all cars now) can then be further divided into: manifold or port injection and direct injection (into the combustion chamber). The chapter presents a testing procedure that can be applied to any fuel injection system.
