ABSTRACT

Although one of the primary reasons for developing small area classifications is the desire to simplify reality, the complexity of analytical processes and procedures often end up generating large numbers of multidimensional outputs. Within this deluge of outputs lies a wealth of valuable insight. Visualization techniques are used to excavate insight from various forms of data and information products that are generated during the development of classifications. Visualization is also a necessary weapon for effective deployment of small area classifications. This chapter achieves two aims. First, the chapter provides the reader with a robust explanation of the goals of visualization within the milieu of small area classifications. This is followed by a discussion of six popular information visualization techniques within the discipline with a focus of the strengths and weaknesses of these visualization techniques.
