ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the architecture for a multihazard early warning system with emphasis specifically on the earthquake early warning system called Civilians Earthquake Early Warning System. While designing the proposed early warning system for Pakistan, every effort was made to accommodate a multihazard approach for Civionics. The hazards considered are earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, fires and blasts. The chapter aims to leverage the abilities of available seismic sensors to develop a real-time multihazard early warning system that is being installed using realistic simulation results achieved through the OPNET Modeler to generate robust, timely and automatic warning messages and alerts for the communities and installations at risk. It describes the Civionics Zigbee model. A careful observation of the results follows that wireless networks such as Wimax, Wi-Fi and Zigbee are competitive technology solution for early warning systems in multihazard scenarios.
