ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the research issues of sustainable manufacturing based on following perspectives: relation between lean and sustainable manufacturing, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods in sustainable manufacturing (barriers, enablers, factors prioritization and alternatives (concept, design, material, product) selection), research agenda in sustainable manufacturing, sustainable manufacturing portal, and sustainable manufacturing for Industry 4.0. Lean initiatives facilitate sustainable manufacturing as waste elimination goal of lean enabled optimized use of resources. Among the various MCDM methods, the analytic hierarchy process and technique for order preference by similarity to the ideal solution are widely utilized in many studies. Sustainable Industry 4.0 enables the amalgamation of business activities through interconnected elements and process innovation for manufacturing to be flexible, cost effective and eco-friendlier. Sustainable manufacturing focuses on efficient use of energy sources. Sustainable Industry 4.0 ensures environmental protection through efficient use of resources in line with real-time data collection resulting in sustainable green practices.
