ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the intangible ergonomic issues in design which all designers should know. It starts with comparing the designer with a doctor having a holistic view of the subject. It’s important for a designer to design a product well and it is equally important to teach the users how to use the product so as to get the maximum benefit. The issues of low back pain and seating system design have been discussed, wherein those psychological factors that can trigger low back pain were pointed out and hence it might not have anything to do with seating design, good or bad. Users are active at certain times of the day and hence while using many products they might not perform well due to this reason. It is possible for the ergonomist and the designers to predict or select users for specific tasks with specific designs solutions based upon the composition of their skeletal muscle fibers. The strength of users varies from gender to gender and also geographically. This aspect needs to be considered at the design stage.
