ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces readers to how color is perceived by the eyes and then gradually explains the significance of color ergonomics in different domains of design. The issue of color blindness, especially red and green, is discussed and how the designer needs to be careful in not using pure red and pure green as far as possible in their design. The different impacts of color on humans such as cold, warmth, etc. are discussed. The influence of color on human’s performance, such as information processing, is discussed. Designers need to be cautious in color usage on different products based on users’ experience with them. The chapter ends with a word of caution on the judicious usage of colors in products or spaces so that it increases usability and makes it much more humane. Thus, color ergonomics helps the designer select colors for different designs keeping in mind the ergonomic issues so that the design becomes further enriched.
