ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with the importance of the human hand in performing different activities and explains the structure of the human hand and its pertinence in designing of any products. Some ergonomic principles in designing hand-held products are discussed, such as dimensional aspects, maintaining the wrist at neutral, avoiding static muscular load on the hand muscle, etc. Different issues such as color ergonomics as well as safety and context of product usage and its ergonomic significance is discussed. When a human uses any product the posture that the body maintains is very important. Thus, the ergonomic principles of maintaining whole-body posture when designing products are discussed. The hand is an important organ of the human body, but at times its capacity needs to be enhanced. This is where the ergonomics of hand-held products comes into the picture and helps the designers design the product/space so as to enhance the limitations of humans in performing a particular task.
