ABSTRACT

The introduction chapter deals with topics including determinants, matrices, limitations of transfer function approach, advantages of state variable approach and review of state models. The determinants and matrices are used in many branches of engineering to represent the mathematical expressions of various physical systems. The transfer function approach is one of the useful ways of representing the physical systems to perform time domain and frequency domain analyses. The inherent demerits of transfer function representation lead to the use of state variable approach. The procedure for obtaining the state models of various physical systems such as electrical, mechanical, electro-mechanical, liquid-level systems is illustrated with numerical examples. The method of obtaining state models from transfer function, block diagram, and signal flow graph is also presented with the help of suitable illustration.
