ABSTRACT

The final chapter of Part II wraps up the Stupid Simple Toolkit in a nice bow and prepares the reader for the challenges that will be presented in Part III. Here the author recaps some of the recurring themes and characters from earlier chapters by describing a showdown with his division safety manager. Along with his team, the author had been conducting a trial of a program designed to help prevent injuries on their site. The program, he explains, had been a miserable failure at first because the team had not learned how to measure success properly. They had used the tired mantra of “compliance” in order to assess the program’s effectiveness. Just before their division manager came to shut down the experiment, they discovered that success should not be measured by compliance, but by the actions taken to attain it. The Stupid Simple Tool in this chapter is a challenge to do just that: Measure action.
