ABSTRACT
Products that are easy to maintain are likely to last longer. Thus, it is important to design for ease of maintainability. This chapter presents the different types of maintenance processes such as preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance. The focus is on identifying product design parameters that facilitate the product maintenance process. To that end, design parameters which improve accessibility and location of parts are identified. Design methodologies such as the SAE maintainability index and the Bretby maintainability index are described in detail as well. Equipment maintenance is a crucial operation in the military. It ensures equipment and systems availability. Some design guidelines that enhance ease of maintenance of military systems are presented at the end of the chapter.
