ABSTRACT

Reuse, recycling and remanufacturing are also referred to as end-of-life options. This implies that a product that is at the end of its useful life can be recycled, reused or remanufactured. Products need to be designed differently for each of the three end-of-life options. Thus, a product that is destined to be recycled could utilize different types of fasteners, for instance, than the one that is destined to be remanufactured. With this principle in mind, design guidelines for each end-of-life option are presented. Advantages and disadvantages of each end-of-life option are discussed. In addition, a case study to demonstrate design for remanufacturing is presented at the end of the chapter.
