ABSTRACT

Decomposition is the breakdown and disappearance of dead organic debris and release of its constituent nutrients that become available for plant uptake. Photo-oxidation is abiotic catabolism resulting from direct exposure to solar radiation. Decomposition is a relatively easy process to manipulate for experimental purposes, using techniques to exclude particular organisms from weighed samples of litter. In addition to initiating and promoting decomposition, the feeding and burrowing activities of many detritivores, and other animals, redistribute and mix soil and organic material. Decomposition and detritivores have acquired substantial economic value, as the cost of removing organic debris in the absence of detritivores has been recognized. Decomposition is a key ecosystem process that results in the recycling of dead organic material into new plant growth. A predictable sequence of blow flies, burying beetles, flesh flies and flesh beetles are instrumental in removal of animal carcasses and are instrumental in forensic studies.
