ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the graphical user interface (GUI) for DotGame3D to improve the scoring display and remove the mouse cursor during gameplay. The title screen should convey something about the game, not just the title. The chapter discusses how to grab a screenshot from the game and make it the background image for the title screen. It adds a fog effect to the screenshot in GIMP to make it look like a distant background. The current option screen only supports the resolution settings and a full-screen checkmark. DotGame simply displays “The End” when the player reaches the ending of the game. Decades ago, when arcade video games were in their infancy, endings didn’t exist, and the games simply repeated themselves until the arcade shut down.
